At the Worthing College Academy of Sport the mission is to set new standards in sporting excellence and opportunity. The College is a centre of sporting excellence that offers unrivalled opportunities for young people in the South of England and beyond.
A variety of choice at Worthing College is key to academic and sporting development with the College providing a range of A Level and vocational options. In the Sport and PE department alone we provide courses from Level 2 through to Level 5, allowing students to access courses from the college either for one year or even up to four years. This shows a commitment of academic flexibility and performance.
Being a TASS Dual Career centre this fully meets the mission of the Academy of Sport and links to our ethos of developing the “academic athlete.” Currently the Academy of Sport has nationally recognised programmes in the following sports;
- Men & Women’s Football
- Men & Women’s Rugby
- Netball
- Basketball
Students in these programmes train three times a week and compete at Regional and National level each week. Training is based upon areas such as; technical and tactical, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition and video analysis.
In addition to this the TASS Dual Career Programme is open to students who compete in ANY sport. For us at Worthing College its vital that we support ALL sports in line with those Academies above both in and out of the classroom.
Therefore as a TASS Dual Career Athlete you will have access to the following throughout the academic year;
- One to one tutorial sessions as part of the Academy Athlete to support academic performance,
- Strength and Conditioning Education (in partnership with the Sussex Performance Centre – link towww.sussexperformancecentre.co.uk),
- Nutrition & Recovery Education,
- Sports Psychology Education,
- Free College gym membership,
- Pastoral Support.
All of the above is fitted within the College timetable and with support networks including teachers, tutors, coaches and support staff this allows the “academic athlete” to feel safe within their environment and therefore go onto achieve excellence both within careers and sport.
This is seen with over 35 players representing their country in a range of sports from Football to Hockey as well as almost 100 (to date) representing the county of Sussex. This is shown with our College teams being arguably the most consistent in Sussex by winning 24 County Cups across 4 sports and 4 National titles (Rugby & Football) since the start of the Academy of Sport programme in 2007.
For ALL athletes they would get the opportunity to compete for Worthing College at the AoC Regional Championships, which if successful could lead to representation of the South East in the AoC National Championships each year. Worthing College have played a major part in the South East’s successes in the previous 5-6 years and it would be great if this could continue across a wide range of sports.
As the Academy of Sport has been nationally recognised for a number of years we do experience students who come and study from out of area. Therefore we do have access to host families, which will allow students to study and perform during the week and then return home at the weekend, which we feel is important with regards to any work/life balance.
So if you are keen to be part of the future at Worthing College please contact our Curriculum Manager for PE & Sport and TASS DCC, Dave Hall on d.hall@worthing.ac.uk Looking forward to hearing from you!
