Wakefield College is committed to providing young people in the local community the chance to develop their sporting ability and shine on the highest possible stage all whilst gaining an education and creating a TASS Dual Career. We enrol students from a variety of backgrounds into the college onto A Levels, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 courses as well as offering Higher Education in our new Advanced Skills and Innovation Centre (ASIC).
Students that have a talent and are performing at an elite level are put onto our prestigious Academy of Sporting Excellence (ASE) where their education is worked around their sporting commitments. We offer team sport programmes such as men’s & women’s football and men’s & women’s rugby league where all students take part in daily training sessions by professional and highly qualified coaches with experience of playing or coaching at the top level. This is also accompanied by weekly Strength & Conditioning sessions, performance analysis, one to ones, guest speakers and workshops as well as competitive games in the Association of Colleges Sport Leagues on a Wednesday afternoon.
For those students of an individual sport or another team sport we work around their external training timetable and closely with their coach. We offer those extra sessions during the day that most students miss out on whether they be Strength & Conditioning, technical work, performance analysis, lifestyle support and recovery/rehab to give them the edge on their competitor and strive for excellence. Recently we have had cross country runners, footballers, golfers, hockey players, rugby league players, boxers, cricketers and many more come through the ranks and excel at the highest level of sport whilst building a dual career.
The college provide total support and guidance for aspiring athletes offering regular mentoring sessions, academic flexibility, catch up lessons as well as opportunities outside of college to gain valuable work experience in their desired field. We have great links with local NGBs, elite and grassroots sports teams, the local authority and businesses all so students are prepared for the next step in life, both in sport and a career.
