The University of East London has been pioneering futures since 1898: from the 2nd Industrial Revolution through to where we are now, the 4th. We are a careers-led university, dedicated to supporting our students to develop the skills, emotional intelligence and creativity needed to thrive in a constantly changing world. We work with global organisations to make our courses entrepreneurial, creative, and inspirational.

Opportunities within sport at UEL, are endless – from enhancing your talent with one of our sports scholarships to enhancing your future career with our fantastic range of development options. As of 2021, we currently have 135 sports scholars studying on a range of scholarships and provide 500+ volunteering opportunities. Making the most of the opportunities available to you will bring a tremendous benefit to you personally and professionally. We aim to create an environment that enables you to flourish.

Our commitment to sport is shown as part of our Vision 2028 strategy. Vision 2028 is delivered through several cross-cutting transformation projects. One such project is the East London Global Sport Strategy, which places sport, physical activity, and wellness at the heart of student and institutional success. This aims to go far beyond the sports provision seen at most UK universities, by integrating sport with university-wide efforts to attract and retain students, to accelerate their learning and support transition towards graduate careers.

UEL has made a significant investment in sports scholarships and athlete support services within the High Performance programme that is paving the way in creating our world class athletic super stars. The High Performance programme at UEL is one of the most attractive in the UK and enables elite athletes to balance academics with their sporting ambitions through our carefully-designed programme and world-class facilities that puts the student-athlete at the centre. A holistic approach is taken and our comprehensive support packages are year round and uncapped, meaning a student can access as much support as they need.

The university takes the dual career aspirations of its student-athletes very seriously. Those looking to excel in both sports and academics are afforded the best support and guidance, as well as academic flexibility, where required. They can take inspiration from UEL alumni student-athletes who have excelled in their careers upon graduating; going on to compete professionally, represent their country and become the business leaders of the future.

Current sports scholars at UEL include:

  • 2021 European U20 200m Gold medallist, Derek Kinlock
