The University of Southampton is the South East Lead Hub administering active partnerships with the University of Brighton and Bournemouth University.
The Hub is administered by Sarah Nightingale, based at the Sports Performance Centre at the University’s Wide Lane Sports Grounds. The Sports Performance Centre is a purpose built facility including the gym which is fully equipped with Olympic lifting platforms and sports specific equipment that is used for analysis, such as Dartfish. Furthermore, the use of the astro turf and playing fields, further enhance the capabilities of programme delivery.
Chris Szedlak is the University’s Strength and Conditioning Coach working alongside Sarah, and is the TASS Hub Lead S&C Coach for the South East region. As an Accredited S&C Coach (ACCS) he has more than four years experience working with elite athletes at national and international levels in a wide range of sports and is currently completing an S&C Masters Degree through the University of Salford. Chris has recently been concentrating on developing and streamlining the S&C delivery to TASS sailors, in partnership with the RYA.
Physiotherapy is supplied by Therapeutics who are the TASS Hub Lead. Theraputics is a large multi-disciplinary medical and fitness centre based at Trojans Sports Club, Eastleigh. The clinic combines a wide variety of services from physiotherapy, sports massage and fitness related services. University of Brighton
Dan Temple is the Strength and Conditioning Coach delivering to TASS Athletes based in the east of our region. Having been UKSCA accredited and with 8 years of S&C experience, he now works with a wide variety of athletes. Contracted out to TASS and the EIS he works with about 35 different athletes from a variety of disciplines, both able bodied and Paralympic athletes. Dan is fortunate to be located within the Sport and Exercise Science department at the University and has access to fantastic facilities such as hypoxic and environmental chambers, online gas analysis and state of the art testing facilities. The University has also just opened a new £1million Fitness Hub in Eastbourne.
Physiotherapy treatment is supplied by Sportswise, a clinic specialising in the treatment of sports injuries from grass roots to elite level. It is a state of the facility with all the necessary clinicians and equipment to provide a first class service.
The TASS team at sportBU is lead by Debbie Timberlake, Sports Performance Manager. Debbie oversees the programme and is responsible for providing athlete support and mentoring. Russell Jolley is the lead S&C Coach and is fully accredited through UKSCA. Russell ensures that every athlete has a sport specific and progressive programme to ensure maximal sports performance.
Paul Gould is the lead Physiotherapist delivering the intial athlete screening and treatment throughout the scholarship. He specialises in Musculoskeletal problems, Sports Injuries and Exercise rehabilitation, Acupuncture, ACL and Knee Rehabilitation.
Oxford University
The team at Oxford University have recently joined the Southampton Hub and look after athletes in the north of the region. Oxford have a number of high quality professionals delivering support and services to TASS athletes, ensuring each individual athlete is supported in a way that is suitable to them.
The programme is overseen by Simon Griffin who looks after the athlete support and lifestyle areas. Chris Ross is the lead S&C Coach and has a proven track record in delivering to elite athletes having previously worked in the TASS programme during his time in post at Birmingham University. Catherine Tomkies completes the team as lead physiotherapist. Catherine is a Silver member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine, as well being trained in sports massage and acupuncture.
