  TALENTED ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

Young Winter Athletes Experience a Multi-Sport Camp - Date Added: 26/07/2010

With the inspiration of Amy Williams' gold medal winning performance at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games still fresh in their memories, 22 young athletes from 9 winter Olympic sport disciplines are being given the opportunity to come together and experience a multi-sport training camp as part of a programme named ‘Generation 2018'.

The training camp, run by the British Olympic Association (BOA) in partnership with the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), is designed to provide athletes with a balance of physical training and education elements. In addition to daily conditioning sessions in the gym and on the track, athletes will learn from experts about topics such as injury prevention, the principles of training to win and planning for success.

The BOA's Director of Olympic Performance Clive Woodward will address the group of athletes on the subject of team building and give insights from the Olympic Games into how the various sports come together to operate successfully as one team, under the banner of Team GB, at an Olympic Games.

The training camp is taking place at St. Mary's University College, Twickenham from 25th - 30th July. Sports taking part in the programme are:  Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, snowboard cross, ski cross and cross country skiing.

Mike Hay, BOA Olympic Performance Manager and Generation 2018 Director said:

"The Generation 2018 project gives the young athletes involved valuable experience of a multi-sport environment and a chance to share experiences with athletes from other winter sports. The mix of physical and educational activity is aimed at helping them to develop as well-rounded athletes. Through programmes such as Generation 2018, the BOA is focussed on ensuring Team GB is able to build upon Amy Williams' success in Vancouver and create an exciting future for Britain's winter athletes."
