Success for TASS Orienteers at The Junior World Championships - Date Added: 16/07/2010

The British Orienteering Team had a very successful trip to Denmark recently for the Junior World Orienteering Championships and in particular it was some of the TASS athletes who provided the top performances.

Kris

The week started off well with Kris Jones, current TASS athlete (supported through Sheffield Hallam University) winning a silver medal in the sprint distance. The next day was the Long distance race and Ralph Street, current TASS athlete (also supported through Sheffield Hallam University) was the best performer with 13th place, which was the best ever finish by a British man in the long distance race. Ralph improved on this in the middle distance with 7th place.

Commenting on his acheivement Kris said, "The medal came very much as a surprise, I have been focusing on sprint for a while and being in Sheffield has been a great help this year."

Kris continued with, "I have found the TASS support at the Sheffield Hallam University Hub and the British Orienteering Centre of Excellence based here to be a great help. I hope this will continue next year, as I will still be young enough to run at the Junior World Champs, and my aim must be to improve on this years results. In the middle and long [distance races] this means striving for top 20 results and in the sprint, this means going for gold. I am also looking forward to the Junior European Cup which is being held in Scotland this year (September) and should mean lots of British athletes being in the hunt for medals on home turf."

To cap off a great week both Kris and Ralph were in the men's relay team that finished in 8th place and Mairead Rocke, current TASS athlete (supported through Hertfordshire University) was in our women's relay team that finished 9th.

Commenting on the success of the team, British Orienteering's International Programme Director Gareth Candy said,  "There is no question that the TASS support provided to these athletes has played a major role in their success and certainly all three of our best performing athletes (Kris Jones, Ralph Street and Mairead Rocke) at the Junior World Orienteering Championships have spent time training at our Sheffield Centre of Excellence based at Sheffield Hallam University which has been made possible through TASS support."

GrahamNext up for British Orienteering is The World University Orienteering Championships which begin in Sweden this weekend. Expections of some great performances are high.  Current TASS athlete and one of our 'Ones to Watch' Graham Gristwood is competing and looking to improve on his 10th place finish in the sprint race at the European Championships.  Also competing is current TASS athlete Anne Edwards as well as former TASS athletes Tessa Hill, Rebecca Harding and Laura Daniel.
