Short Track Speed Skater Jack Whelbourne, who was announced as a member of the Great Britain team for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics has just taken the Bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Chinese Taipei. Jack (18yrs) took Bronze in the men's 1500m behind Jinkyu Noh (KOR) and Sunghan Kim (KOR).

Coach Joanna Williams said "This was a really good performance by Jack, it was a tough race with 8 skaters qualifying for the final, but he kept his focus and used his head, tactically he skated very well, and showed great strength at the end of the race to take the Bronze medal"

Latest news from the Championships in Taipei....

This weekend saw some World Class performances from Great Britain Short Track Speed Skaters Jack Whelbourne and Elise Christie; both were taking part in the Short Track Junior World Championships in Chinese Taipei. Jack (18) who is the youngest skater in the Short Track Team for the Vancouver Winter Olympics opened his competition in great style by taking the Bronze medal in the 1500m, in the 500m Jack fell in the quarter-finals and so placed 14^th but he came back from this and finished 6^th in the 1000m, giving him an overall position of 6^th.

Elise Christie finished 8^th in the 1500m and skated through to the semi-final stages of both the 500m and 1000m, finishing in 6^th and 5^th places respectively. Her 3 top 10 placing gave her the overall position of 9^th.

Stuart Horsepool the Short Track Performance Director said "These are very encouraging results from both skaters, they are the youngest members of the Great Britain Squad and this will no doubt give them a great boost as they return to the UK to continue their training and make final preparations for the European Championships in Dresden on the 22-24^th January and also the Olympic Games in Vancouver which begin on the 12^th February 2010"
